Material Plane

In a multiverse full of strange new planes – the Feywild and the Shadowfell, to name two of the most notable – the Material Plane is in some ways the most mysterious of all. Home of the mortal races and anchor to the multiverse, the Material Plane is without guile or special enchantment, yet in its fragility it is the center of the planar drama. It is even unclear whether the plane is singular or plural, as the worlds of Krynn, Toril, Oerth, and Eberron, among others, all call their planes “the” Material Plane.

Material Plane natives cannot generally travel to other planes without magical aid. Rare spelljamming ships can travel on the Astral Sea, a strange allegorical metaplane that contains – or perhaps exists tangent to – many of the others. Some folk, including wizards, can draw power from the Elemental Chaos, a metaplane parallel to the Astral Sea; but this connection is one-way, and wizards cannot easily enter the Chaos or the planes within it without specially tailored spells.
